When constructing collages, I select paper pieces by color or texture as though I were choosing paint from a palette. I build the collage by layering the paper until I achieve the image that feels right. Sometimes I find just the paper I have in mind, but most often I improvise and look for the unexpected. In addition to paper, I mix in graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic paint. The immediacy of working with paper lends itself to intuitive and surprising effects.
